Lao Laan Xang

We (Jeff and I) had lunch out with Cindy and Jesse (his bandmates) at Lao Laan Xang today. For an appetizer I had spring rolls (sans egg) and Jeff had the most definitely NOT VEGAN crab rangoon (or "crab racoons" if you prefer.) For our entrees Jeff ordered a tasty mango tofu curry, #28 (which I was remiss in not photographing) and I had #22.

As you can see, #22 is a lovely mock duck in a sweet ginger and garlic sauce with mixed veggies. I tend to avoid carrots [my mother asked as soon as she saw the photos] because, well, I've never found a way I like them. None-the-less, they did not detract from this dish in the slightest. I scooted them aside and dug into the straw mushrooms, baby corn, peas... mmm.

On a hotness scale, my nose ran slightly, but at only 2 stars ("careful") I wasn't risking serious tongue burns. Jeff usually goes for 3 stars ("adventurous") and that's too much for an entire meal. I'd love to bring my father sometime because he's suicidal (or "manly") enough to order 4 stars ("Native Lao"). I'd like to give it a go, but only for a mouthful or two off his plate.

Service was a little slow (only 2 servers and 1 cook today) but the quality of food was worth the wait. The other odd thing was how unnaturally quiet the place was. It filled up as we were there, but it never got above a whisper. That's eerie. Normally it's a little more jumping, but I guess the cold had everyone subdued. Hopefully the four of us didn't offend the quieter patrons around us.
